SPRAIN/STRAIN

What causes sprain/strain? Strains and sprains are caused when a joint is forced beyond its normal range of motion, or when you overuse muscles that are out of shape or haven’t been warmed up properly. Back strain can occur when you suddenly twist your back or lift without bending your knees. Neck Strain can be caused by an auto accident. Strain occurs when a muscle or tendon is overstretched. Strains are usually caused by putting stress on tight or weak muscles. A Sprain is a tear in a ligament tissue that connects bones, caused by sudden, forceful, twisting of a joint. If the tissue doesn’t heal properly, the muscles may shorten and the joint becomes arthritic. This causes the joint to misalign and the nerves to become chronically irritated. This can speed up degeneration or arthritis 10 times faster. A knee problem occurs from a twist or injury that may produce a mild sprain or moderate stretching or splitting of the ligaments. Elbow sprain/strain results from improper or repeated gripping and bending or plain overuse can strain elbow muscles and tendons.

What a chiropractor can do? To help find the cause of your pain and stiffness, you and your chiropractor discuss your symptoms, any prior injuries, your health history, and your lifestyle, including work and leisure activities. Physical, orthopedic and neurological tests can help reveal the condition of a joint. Static motion palpation tests check for tenderness, pain, swelling and restricted range of motion. If needed, other tests, such as x-rays may be done to show detailed images of muscles, ligaments and other soft tissue. Accurate diagnosis requires a medical history and examination along with a course of treatment.
